Last updated: 12 October 2026. These terms govern your use of AfricaCaptions. By using the site, you agree to them.

The service

AfricaCaptions is a browser-based tool for creating, editing and translating subtitles and captions for video. Captioning and translating by hand, and export, are free with no account. Automatic captions and AI translation are coming soon. When they arrive, automatic captions will need a free account and will have a monthly allowance of minutes.

Your account

Accounts are coming soon with automatic captions. You will sign in with your email address and a code we send you. Keep access to that email account secure. One account per person. We may suspend accounts that abuse the service, for example by creating many accounts to get extra free minutes.

Plans

AfricaCaptions is free. When automatic captions arrive, free accounts will get 60 minutes a month, and unused minutes will not carry over. A paid Plus plan with more minutes is coming soon. We will publish its price and terms on this page before it goes on sale, and nobody is charged unless they choose to buy it.

Your content and rights

You keep ownership of the captions you create. You are responsible for having the rights to caption or translate the videos you use, and for complying with the terms of any platform a video comes from. You grant us a limited licence to process your content solely to provide the service to you.

Acceptable use

Do not use AfricaCaptions for unlawful content, to infringe others' rights, to download or process material you do not have the rights to, to resell the service, or to abuse or overload the system.

AI features

AI translation and automatic captions are coming soon. AI translation is there to help you work faster, but it can contain errors. Have a fluent speaker review it before you rely on it or publish it. Automatic captions are drafts. They have no punctuation and can contain errors.

Availability and changes

The service is provided on an "as is" and "as available" basis. We may change, add, or discontinue features.

Disclaimers and liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, AfricaCaptions is provided without warranties, and we are not liable for indirect or consequential damages. Our total liability is limited to the amount you paid us in the twelve months before the claim.

Termination

We may suspend or end access for violations of these terms. You can stop using the service at any time.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Michigan, United States, without regard to its conflict-of-laws rules.
